Gutierrez, Tribe rally to down Royals

08/20/2008 - Cleveland, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Franklin Gutierrez's three-run home run sparked a five-run eighth and the Cleveland Indians battled back to top the Kansas City Royals, 8-5, in the second of three meetings between the clubs.

Kelly Shoppach added a pair of solo home runs while Jhonny Peralta launched a two-run blast for the Indians, who have won four of their last five.

Zach Jackson, in his second start with Cleveland since being traded from the Brewers in the CC Sabathia deal, served up five runs -- four earned -- on seven hits in seven innings for a no-decision. Juan Rincon (3-3) hurled a perfect eighth to pick up the win.

Joakim Soria (1-3) had a rare breakdown out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on two hits and a pair of walks while recording just one out in taking the loss behind Gil Meche, who gave up just two hits and three runs -- only one earned -- while striking out nine in his seven-inning start.

Mike Aviles was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI for Kansas City, which has lost seven of eight.

With a pitch-count at 104, Meche was pulled in the eighth for Ramon Ramirez, who was greeted by Shoppach's second home run of the game, this one hitting the left-field foul pole to cut Cleveland's deficit to 5-4.

Ramirez was pulled after a walk and a sacrifice bunt, and Soria came on for the rare five-out save. With an open base, Soria gave Grady Sizemore a free pass, but Gutierrez slammed the second pitch he saw over the left field wall to give the Indians the lead for good.

Ryan Garko added an RBI single later in the inning and Jensen Lewis finished it off for his fourth save of the year, aided by Gutierrez's diving grab in right to end the game.

The Royals loaded the bases in the opening frame with nobody out but only got one run across on Jose Guillen's sacrifice fly to center.

Peralta connected on a letter-high fastball for a two-run shot in the bottom half and Shoppach added a solo round-tripper an inning later for a 3-1 Tribe lead.

Shoppach's blast was the last hit Meche allowed -- a span of 17 hitters.

KC took a 5-3 lead with a four-run fifth. Two singles preceded a scary incident, as Mitch Maier, trying to sacrifice the runners over with a bunt, couldn't get out of the way of Johnson's up-and-in offering.

The ball caromed off Maier's helmet before hitting his right cheek and nose, and he fell to the ground before leaving under his own power with a towel over his face. He was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

Mark Teahen came on to pinch-run and scored when Aviles launched a bases clearing double to the left-field gap. Aviles stole third two batters later and Shoppach's throw sailed over third baseman Andy Marte's head to let Aviles trot home.

Game Notes

Matt Kenseth And Kevin Harvick Favorites To Take NASCAR Nextel Cup Championship

(September 15)—The NASCAR season has hit the homestretch with the opening event on this year’s Chase for the Cup taking place this weekend at the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway. With 10 races remaining to determine the Cup Series champion, leading online sportsbook MySportsbook.com today announced odds on all 10 Chase qualifying drivers capturing the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

One of the largest sportsbook sites on the Internet, MySportsbook.com currently lists the top two drivers in the point standings as the early favorites to win the Nextel Cup. Entering the Chase for the Cup with a slim five-point lead in the point standings, 2003 NASCAR champ Matt Kenseth has been made a slight favorite to win his second Cup at 7/2 betting odds. 2001 Cup Rookie of the Year Kevin Harvick has betting odds listed at 5/2 and four-time NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon is listed at 6/1 to capture the Nextel Cup this year.

Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his legendary father who won six NASCAR titles, Dale Earnhardt Jr. stands at 8/1 to breakthrough with his first Cup victory. Staying with the family theme, MySportsbook.com lists 2005 Rookie of the Year Kyle Busch at 14/1 to succeed big brother Kurt’s 2004 NASCAR title. While Kasey Kahne was the final driver to qualify for the Chase with a third place finish last week, the oddsmakers give him a fighting chance at 10/1 mainly due to several mile-and-a-half tracks remaining on the schedule. Despite going winless on the NASCAR circuit this season, Jeff Burton enters the Chase at 5/1 to capture the Cup title. Meanwhile, rookie Denny Hamlin is 4/1 to win the championship, while veteran driver Mark Martin enters the Chase for the Cup as a 15/1 long shot to win his first NASCAR title in his 24th and final season.

MySportsbook.com will offer comprehensive Nascar betting lines on every race remaining on the Nextel Cup series including driver match-ups, props and odds to win each race. For a complete list of NASCAR odds, please visit www.MySportsbook.com.
